What It Does & Compatibility

The OontZ Bluetooth Adapter transmits audio from your TV or device (laptop, computer, tablet, Mac, iPad, or music receiver) to one or two OontZ speakers over Bluetooth. Its Low Latency Feature reduces transmission delays that can cause lip-sync issues when watching video.

Supported OontZ speaker models:

  • OontZ Angle 3 ULTRA
  • OontZ Angle 3XL ULTRA
  • OontZ Angle 3 RainDance

To connect and play to two speakers, both speakers must be the same model. The adapter only works with supported models; for the latest list visit TheOontZ.com/BT-Adapter.

Firmware requirements: OontZ Angle 3 ULTRA needs version 2.1.5 or later, OontZ Angle 3XL ULTRA needs version 3.3.6 or later, and all firmware versions of the OontZ Angle 3 RainDance work. Two speakers must be on the same firmware version.

Volume note: some TVs cannot adjust the speaker volume via their remote. In that case, use the volume buttons on each speaker. If your TV can control the volume, set each speaker to maximum and use the TV remote to adjust.

  • Speaker Mode Button: when two speakers are connected, switches between Dual Stereo Mode and Left-Right Channel Mode
  • SPK 1 and SPK 2 blue indicator lights: show connection status of Speaker 1 and Speaker 2
  • DS orange light: lit when speakers are in Dual Stereo Mode (each plays full stereo)
  • L/R white light: lit when two speakers are in Left-Right Channel Mode for stereo separation

Connectors:

  • Optical/Audio In: accepts either the 3.5mm audio cable or the Digital Audio Optical cable
  • DC IN power connector: for the Micro USB power adapter

Connecting Your Audio Source

Connect to your TV using the Digital Audio Optical cable (recommended): plug the longer end into the adapter's Optical/Audio In connector and the shorter end into the Optical Digital Audio Out on your TV. Make sure both ends are fully inserted.

If your TV has no optical output, use the 3.5mm audio cable: plug one end into the adapter's Optical/Audio In connector and the other into the TV's Headphone or Audio-Out connector. If the TV only has Left/Right analog (RCA) outputs, a 3.5mm to RCA cable is needed (sold separately at TheOontZ.com/accessories).

To connect other devices, plug the 3.5mm cable from the adapter's Optical/Audio In connector into the device's Headphone or Audio-Out connector.

Turning On the Adapter

  • Step 1: Plug the Micro USB power adapter into a power outlet.
  • Step 2: Insert the small end of the Micro USB adapter into the adapter's DC IN connector.
  • Step 3: The SPK1 light lights up, indicating the adapter is on. A slowly flashing blue SPK1 light means it is ready to connect to your speaker(s); a solid blue SPK1 light means it has reconnected to a supported speaker and is ready to play.

Pairing One Supported Speaker

  • Step 1: Turn on your OontZ speaker. A flashing blue light means it is ready to connect. If it is solid blue, it has reconnected to a previous device; press and hold the speaker's Bluetooth Button for 5 seconds to disconnect so the light flashes.
  • Step 2: Confirm the adapter is on (SPK 1 blue light lit). If SPK 1 is solid, it reconnected to a previous speaker; press and hold the adapter's Bluetooth Button for 5 seconds until SPK 1 flashes.
  • Step 3: Press and release the adapter's Bluetooth Button. SPK 1 and SPK 2 alternate flashing. SPK 1 turns solid when connected. The adapter searches for a second speaker for 60 seconds, then the flashing SPK2 light turns off, and the adapter is ready to play.

The adapter must be within 10 unobstructed feet of the speakers to pair. To switch to a different speaker, press and hold the adapter's Bluetooth Button for 5 seconds to disconnect first.

Pairing Two Supported Speakers

  • Step 1: Turn on both OontZ speakers; their blue lights should flash. If either is solid blue, press and hold that speaker's Bluetooth Button for 5 seconds to disconnect it.
  • Step 2: Confirm the adapter is on with SPK 1 flashing (press and hold its Bluetooth Button for 5 seconds if it is solid).
  • Step 3: Press and release the adapter's Bluetooth Button. SPK 1 and SPK 2 alternate flashing, then SPK 1 turns solid blue (first speaker connected). The adapter searches for the second speaker for up to 60 seconds; SPK 2 turns solid blue when the second connects.
  • Step 4: If SPK2 turns off after 60 seconds, the second speaker was not found. Make sure both speakers are the same model and on the same firmware version.

Both speakers must be the same model and on the same firmware version. The adapter must be within 10 unobstructed feet of the speakers to pair.

Dual Stereo & Left-Right Channel Modes

With two speakers, the Speaker Mode Button switches between two modes:

  • Dual Stereo Mode (orange light lit): use when placing the two speakers in different areas; both speakers play in full stereo, up to 66 unobstructed feet apart.
  • Left-Right Channel Mode (white light lit): use when placing the two speakers in the same area for stereo separation; one plays the Left channel and the other the Right.

To switch from Dual Stereo to Left-Right, press the Speaker Mode Button; the white light lights, the orange light turns off, and SPK1 says 'Left Channel' and SPK2 says 'Right Channel'.

To switch from Left-Right to Dual Stereo, press the Speaker Mode Button; the orange light lights, the white light turns off, and both speakers say 'Dual Stereo'.

Placing speakers on the ground, or having walls or obstructions between them and the adapter, significantly reduces this range.

Resetting the Adapter

  • Step 1: Turn the adapter on.
  • Step 2: Press and hold the Bluetooth Button for 5 seconds, then release.
  • Step 3: The adapter is now reset.
  • Step 4: Re-pair with your OontZ speaker(s) following the pairing instructions.

Other Important Notes

When OontZ speakers run on battery power while connected to the adapter, they stay on and will not automatically turn off after 30 minutes of inactivity, which drains the battery. OontZ recommends either keeping each speaker plugged into a USB wall charger so it stays charged and available, or turning each speaker off when finished. When the adapter is on and the speakers are turned back on, the adapter automatically reconnects to each speaker within range.

Safety & Precautions

  • When the adapter is plugged in to a power source, never use it near water to prevent the risk of electric shock.
  • Protect the Micro USB power adapter from being pinched, particularly at the connectors.
  • Unplug the power adapter during lightning storms or when unused for long periods.
  • Keep the adapter away from heat sources and naked flames, and do not expose it to excessive heat or direct sunlight.
  • Do not make alterations to the adapter, and refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Use only the supplied Micro USB power adapter, which meets local regulatory requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which OontZ speakers work with this adapter?

The OontZ Angle 3 ULTRA, OontZ Angle 3XL ULTRA, and OontZ Angle 3 RainDance. For the latest list, visit TheOontZ.com/BT-Adapter.

Can I connect two speakers?

Yes, up to two speakers, but both must be the same model and on the same firmware version. The adapter searches for a second speaker for up to 60 seconds after the first connects.

My adapter will not power on. What should I check?

Make sure the Micro USB power adapter is connected to the DC IN connector and a working power outlet. The SPK1 light should be flashing or solid blue.

I hear an echo when connected to my TV. How do I fix it?

Turn off the TV's internal speaker so only the audio to the adapter is enabled. This setting is usually under the TV's audio settings menu.

There is no audio from my speaker after connecting. What should I check?

Confirm the audio cable is fully inserted, the volume is audible on both the speaker and source, and the device's line-out/headphone-out or Digital Audio out is enabled. Some TVs require selecting an external speaker as the audio output.

I hear a buzzing sound over the optical connection. What causes it?

Set your TV's audio format to PCM out rather than encoded audio such as Dolby Digital. This is usually found in the TV's audio settings.

How do I reset the adapter?

Turn it on, press and hold the Bluetooth Button for 5 seconds, then release. The adapter is reset and you can re-pair your speakers.

Why don't my speakers turn off automatically?

While connected to the adapter on battery power, the speakers stay on and won't auto-shutoff after 30 minutes. Keep them plugged into a USB charger or turn them off manually when done.
